"I had an oil change on my 911 C4 within the
last month! It was a very good experience. During the visit I was able
to relax in the lounge and even go out and talk with the tech, look
under the car and ask questions. I called to schedule this appoint
first thing in the morning and was able to get in and out in about 1 ½
hours which was great." 10/23/08
The Jaguar Supersport (SS) was first introduced for the 2010 model as a replacement to the outgoing Jaguar XJR. The XJ was totally redesigned for 2010, a much needed update for the aging Jaguar model. This Jaguar model is different than the previous generation in just about every way possible. Yet, at the same time the 'old-world' traditional Jaguar heritage is subtly present. The 2011 XJ Supersport is simply a powerhouse, putting out 510 hp and going from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds. It is at the top of the Jaguar XJ lineup and is faster and more refined than most other Jaguar models. The 2011 XJ's all-aluminum structure is a rarity even in the luxury segment, where many cars utilize a heavier steel frame. Jaguar says the XJ is at least 300 pounds lighter than the competition. Exterior length is 200.4 inches. Stretched models add about 5 inches in overall length. The XJ is the narrowest sedan of its competitive set, but it's among the longer sedans in the class. Considering the redesign for 2010, the 2011 model will have minimal changes.
'11 XJ SS Power
The Supersport model is at the top of the XJ hierarchy in power, this is essentially what differentiates it from the other XJs. The XJ SS gets the same AJ-V8 510 PA supercharged 5.0 liter engine in the XF-R and XK-R that produces a very powerful 510 horsepower. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, and is rear wheel drive. The 2011 Supersport get Jaguar's most powerful engine at the moment, the supercharged version of the Gen III AJ-series 5.0L V8, which develops a peak output 461lb-ft (625Nm) of torque.
Design of the Jag XJ Supersport
The XJ Supersport for 2011 has an aluminum construction, which gives the car a significant weight advantage over its competitors; the car weighs about 300 pounds less, and even undercuts the much smaller XF slightly in terms of weight. The rear overhang is also enormous, which provides the large trunk (18.4 cubic feet) that is to be expected with a large, comfortable vehicle, but from certain angles just looks too long and with too much rear overhang. The taillights and rear of the car are somewhat reminiscent of a Bentley Continental Flying Spur. From the front, the 2011 XJ SS pays strong homage to the XF, and even stronger homage to the C-XF concept car. The front ends are remarkably similar, with the XJ's grille jutting forward a bit more and the lower bumper designs different between the cars. The hood of the '11 XJ SS is dramatically domed and creased, an apparent trend across the market. The car looks coupe-like in profile, with a gradually sloping roofline, high rear deck and high beltline. It's more Mercedes CLS than previous generation XJ. In front of each front door is a chrome gill that Jaguar calls a "power vent." They echo the slats in the XK coupe. In back, a chrome strip spans the width of the trunk.
Driving the 2011 XJ SS
Driving the 2011 XJ Supersport is an incredible experience. The drive is so refined, yet powerful and driver controlled. The XJ includes an air-spring suspension and automatically controlled shock absorbers that vary firmness as conditions dictate. The XJ Supersport gets a firmer suspension with steel springs, rather than air springs, larger Brembo brakes, R Performance sport seats and special trim inside and out. It also has adaptive cruise control, and Z-rated P255/35R20 tires. The 2011 Supersport requires Premium unleaded fuel. The Supersport gets the same electronically governed rear differential, Jag's Adaptive Dynamics system and the three-mode JaguarDrive Control with Normal, Dynamic and Winter detents, as the XFR.
Jaguar XJ Supersport Cabin
The cabin of the '11 Supersport has the expected levels of comfort and luxury, with multiple wood and leather options available to buyers. There is a strip of wood that encircles the entire cabin and holds everything together, while bringing a sense of old-world charm to an otherwise very modern interior. The old-world charm meets modern technology in the virtual gauges - the entire gauge cluster is actually a large 12.3 inch TFT screen, which means that it's able to emphasize a certain gauge over another. The 1,200-watt Bowers & Wilkins 7.1 channel audio system is an unbelievable sound system. Multicast HD radio and Sirius Satellite Radio are among the new standard technology features. Another luxury feature is the headrest-mounted rear-seat screens, and the XJ's "theater on the move" system can route four different signals at the same time, so the rear seat occupants, driver, and front-seat passenger can all be listening to different things simultaneously. For 2011, the XJ SS interior continues to get the full XF treatment, with a more modern design, piano-black and chrome surfaces, the JaguarDrive gear selector that motors up from the center console and virtual gauges on a 12.3-inch display. Though the tech is high, the gauges still appear as classic analog, though different instruments can be emphasized based on conditions. It's a mix of old and new, which the interior as a whole attempts to accomplish with familiar rich leather, as well as wood trim that runs in a continuous line from the door panels across the top of the dashboard. The long-wheelbase XJL offers 5 more inches of backseat legroom.
Summary
Jaguar's flagship sedan, the aluminum-bodied XJ, has been on the market in its current form since 2003. The new 2011 XJ is set to go on sale early next year and will feature both short and long-wheelbase variants. Safety features match the class baseline: dual front airbags, front occupant side-impact airbags, curtain-style head protection airbags front and rear, rear park assist, tire-pressure monitor, advanced four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control. Front park assist is optional. The XJ's tire-pressure monitor is one of the most sophisticated available, measuring absolute pressure in each tire. Fully 50% of the aluminum in the XJ is composed of post-recycled stock, and 85% of the total car is recyclable. Visit the official Jaguar XJ site for the latest updates on this model.
