Jaguar History
Owners of Jaguar cars enjoy a presence on the road, excellent handling, and uncompromised luxury in the cabin. There are clubs around the country for Jaguar owners and enthusiast. There are three in Pennsylvania. They include Jaguar Club of Pittsburgh, Delaware Valley Jaguar Club, and the Susquehanna Valley Jaguar Club. Jaguar was originally founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company by Sir William Lyons in 1922, originally making motorcycle sidecars before switching to passenger cars. The name was changed to Jaguar after World War II due to the unfavorable connotations of the SS initials. The Jaguar company started production with the pre-war 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 litre models which used engines designed by the Standard Motor Company. The 1.5 liter four-cylinder engine was still supplied by Standard but the two larger six-cylinder ones were made in house. These cars have become known unofficially as Mark IVs. The first post war model was the 1948 Mark V available with either 2.5 or 3.5 liter engines and had a more streamlined appearance than pre-war models, but more important was the change to independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes. The big breakthrough was the launch in 1948 of the XK120 sports car, which combined a body shell essentially copied from a 1940 BMW 328 Coupe with the new XK twin overhead camshaft (DOHC) 3.5 liter hemi-head six-cylinder engine designed by William Heynes, Walter Hassan and Claude Baily.
The company has changed owners a number of times. In 1999 it became part of Ford's new Premier Automotive Group. On 11 June 2007, Ford announced that it planned to sell Jaguar, along with Land Rover. Jaguar today is a British luxury car manufacturer, headquartered in Coventry, England. It has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Indian company Tata Motors Ltd. since March 2008 and is operated as part of the Jaguar Land Rover business. In thanks to a new owner, Jaguar cars have evolved into a new phase of modern and highly marketable design. The all aluminum bodies allow for better fuel efficiency, and of course Jaguar cars are built to include the latest technological advances.
